Corporate Affiliate Spotlight: North Kent Marshes Water Level Management Board

WiFCERM corporate affiliate membership is free and open to all organisations who work in, or support, the FCERM sector, who want to become recognised partners in contributing to gender equality across the FCERM sector. We’re shining a light on our corporate affiliate members, and this month we hear from North Kent Marshes Water Level Management Board.

Women in FCERM are shining a spotlight on Corporate Affiliate Members across the sector, and as an Internal Drainage Board / Water Level Management Board, this felt like a good opportunity to reflect on how the role of organisations like ours is evolving.
Historically, much of the focus for IDBs was understandably on land drainage and flood protection. Those responsibilities remain hugely important, but the conversations around water management are becoming far broader and more complex.

While IDBs have always played an important role in local water management, the challenges surrounding these decisions are becoming increasingly interconnected, spanning flood resilience, environmental priorities, climate adaptation and long-term water sustainability.
That shift is also changing the skills and perspectives needed within the sector. Modern water management relies not only on operational and engineering expertise, but also on collaboration with ecologists, local authorities, farmers, regulators, conservation organisations and local communities.

A broad range of perspectives is becoming increasingly important in shaping balanced and practical decisions, and the Board structure helps ensure those decisions are informed by people connected to the communities, land, infrastructure and environments affected by them.

As the sector evolves, networks such as Women in FCERM play an important role in connecting different experiences, disciplines and perspectives across flood and coastal risk management. Broadening the range of voices involved in these conversations can only strengthen how we approach the challenges ahead.
